I had the honor of participating in a fun collaboration with County Park Friends and the four mayors of Santa Cruz County. "Outside the Frame" features frames painted by local artists, which are installed around the county framing local scenery, and people! They make for a great photo op, and offer fun & inspiration as we head out of pandemic restrictions.

Immediate thoughts when conjuring up an art piece to represent Seacliff Village were the pier, cement ship, and shark population. I worked around those initial ideas to develop the concept, designing a transition from on-land to underwater and including other marine life. For colors, I wanted the piece to be vibrant and eye-catching from a distance, so included warm sunset hues as well as blues & greens of the ocean.

When the Plastic Pickup asked me to create a mural that would go behind their massive golf ball wave project, I knew it was a perfect fit! Just a few years ago these 20,000 golfballs were sitting on the ocean floor, releasing plastic into the sea as their outer core degraded. Alex Weber of The Plastic Pickup led the golfball collection effort and went on to publish a scientific study demonstrating the release of toxic components. As a result, NOAA Marine Sanctuaries and Pebble Beach Golf Course designed a protocol to collect the 2-5 million more balls estimated to be along the coastline. The goal...

This month I collaborated with Ventana Surfboards on their first-ever Handplane Artist Project! I’ve always admired Ventana for their commitment to the environment. The reclaimed redwood handplane will be finished with neoprene wetsuit offcuts for the hand strap, and glassed with an eco-friendly bio-based resin, ready to glide down any wave! Here are a timelapse clip and some progress pics!   I drew inspiration from the canary rockfish (for its color) & California poppies, our state flower.
