Range: Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City
Threats: Habitat degradation, pollution, fishing, non-native predators. Fewer than 1000 individuals are estimated to live in the wild. Ironically, they thrive in captivity & are a key subject in medical research.
Adaptations: Made for aquatic fun with their ever present gill frills and hydrodynamic tail.
