Southern Sea Otter
Enhydra lutris

Range: California’s Central Coast

Threats: Hunted to near extinction in the 1800’s, the sea otter made a comeback with help from government protection and reintroduction efforts. Shark bite fatality is stopping them from expanding to their former range beyond the Central California Coast. They are a keystone species, supporting kelp forest & sea grass habitats.

Adaptations: This ocean native never needs to leave the sea, wearing its thick fur coat for warmth.
