Guadalupe Fur Seal
Arctocephalus townsendi

Range: Waters of Southern California & Pacific Coast of Mexico

Threats: Hunted heavily by commercial sealers in 1700’s to 1800’s, and believed to be extinct by the early 1900’s. A small group was discovered on Guadalupe Island in 1954. With government protection, their population has been steadily on the rise. Current threats include entanglement, oil spills, military operations, and ocean noise.

Adaptations: Growing up in the surf, you can sense their one-ness with the sea.
