Red Wolf

Canis rufus

Range: Southeastern US

Threats: Relentlessly killed throughout history, the species was declared extinct in the wild in 1980. A captive breeding program returned the wolves to the wild. Unfortunately, their numbers sharply declined to an estimated 20 wild animals. They are threatened by habitat loss, mismanagement, illegal killing, and hybridization and competition with coyotes.

Gray Wolf

Canis lupus

Range: North America & Eurasia

Threats: Historically widespread throughout most of the US, the gray wolf was also killed off via predator control programs. Strong conservation efforts are successfully returning them to their former habitat. They are threatened by habitat loss and conflict with humans and intolerance. They are a keystone species and are vital to ecosystem health.

Adaptations: Teamwork makes the dream work. The pack is loyal to one another, split peaks & shared waves abound.
